Rolling Stats & Taking Names: The 2026 Guide to Building Your Hero on D&D Beyond
Pull up a chair, get comfortable, and let’s talk about hero creation. Creating a new character is arguably one of the best parts of playing Dungeons & Dragons. The endless possibilities, the backstories, figuring out exactly how your new hero is going to survive their first encounter—it’s thrilling. But if you are staring down a blank sheet or navigating digital tools for the first time, it can also feel a bit like homework.
D&D Beyond is a fantastic tool that streamlines the whole ordeal, and with the updated 2024 ruleset, the workflow is smoother than ever. Let’s break down character creation step-by-step so you can get out of the menus and into the game.
Step 1: Setting Your Preferences
When you hit "Create a Character," select the Standard method. This gives you full control while still guiding you through the process.
You'll land on the Character Preferences page. Don't let the wall of toggles intimidate you. Here are the most important settings to check:
Character Name: Give your hero a name, or let the random generator do its thing until inspiration strikes.
Sources: Ensure the core rules are selected. If you are exclusively using the new 2024 options, make sure those are prioritized.
Advancement Type: Check with your Dungeon Master. Campaigns usually run on either "Milestone" (leveling up when the story dictates) or "XP" (leveling up by defeating monsters).
Hit Point Type: "Fixed" automatically gives you the average health increase every level, while "Manual" means you get to roll your hit dice.
Step 2: Choose Your Class
Under the 2024 rules, character creation starts right with your Class. This defines your role in the party, your combat style, and your core abilities.
Select your class from the list to view its details. For example, if you're building a character meant to survive the harsh, sun-baked sands of the Blade Desert, starting with a class like Ranger or Druid sets a strong thematic tone immediately.
Adjust your starting level using the dropdown at the top right if your campaign is starting higher than level 1.
If you pick a spellcasting class, a "Spells" tab will appear. You can pick your magic now, or save it for later when you are looking at your final sheet.
Step 3: Determine Your Origin
Your Origin represents who your character was before they picked up a sword or a spellbook. This is broken down into three key areas:
Background: This is a massive choice. Your background now grants you skill proficiencies, tool proficiencies, starting equipment, and a starting Feat. Crucially, your background also dictates your Ability Score Increases. A "Guide" background, for instance, might be the perfect fit for a local navigating the wastes around Shivairn.
Species: Choose your ancestry. This grants specific physical traits—like darkvision, a breath weapon, or special movement speeds—but it no longer dictates your raw stats.
Languages: Select the languages your character speaks based on their upbringing.
Step 4: Determine Ability Scores
This is where you define your character's raw capabilities: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Generation Methods: D&D Beyond supports Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8), Point Buy, or Manual/Rolled.
Assigning Scores: Once you have your numbers, assign them to your stats. The builder will helpfully highlight which stats are most important for your chosen class.
Apply Background Bonuses: The builder will prompt you to apply the bonuses (+2 and +1, or three +1s) provided by the Background you chose in the previous step.
Step 5: Fill in the Details
Now it's time to flesh out the roleplay elements and get your gear sorted.
Alignment: Where does your moral compass point?
Appearance & Personality: Jot down what your character looks like and answer a few internal questions. Who raised them? What is driving them to adventure?
Equipment: You can choose the standard starting equipment provided by your Class and Background, or you can opt for starting gold to buy your gear a la carte. D&D Beyond makes it incredibly easy to click and add standard gear directly to your inventory.
Step 6: Review Your Sheet
Once you hit "Next" on the final screen, click View Character Sheet.
Take a moment to explore. D&D Beyond has automatically calculated your Armor Class, Initiative, passive senses, and skill modifiers based on all the choices you just made. If you kept digital dice enabled, you can click on almost any number on the sheet to roll directly on your screen.
